SHOP HOUSE PROJECT
Year 2,July 2016

Overview
We were given a specific area and height/GFA limit for this project. As well as a client brief. The client brief stated a house for a family of 6 (parents, 7 year old child, toddler, grandparents). The wife loves art, the husband often invites potential business partners over to their house, the child loves reading, the toddler is active and needs constant attention, the grandparents love cooking, and lastly, one of the grandparent is handicapped.
Concept
Rather than going for a typical shop house layout/form, I decided to challenge myself and go for a unique form, which is surrealism. I decided to combine brutalist architecture with greenery + circular and square/rectangular forms to give a dreamy-like effect, which is what I envisioned surrealism to be. A building which conveys emotions like a painting in a museum, which links back to the client being an artist herself.
Room Layouts
Ground Floor: An outdoor and indoor art gallery, a living room with a massive bookshelf, kitchen and grandparent's room. Since one of the grandparent is handicapped, I decided that it would be convenient for them to travel to and fro from the kitchen and the outside, if they were on the ground floor. The artworks are placed at the main entrance for people to admire the artwork as they walk pass the shop house. There is also an enclosed Art Gallery for works that can't be placed in outdoors.
Second Floor: Parent's Room and Art Room which is linked to the Art Gallery on the ground floor
Third Floor: Kid's Room. Each child has their own private room which is connected by a communal toilet
Sustainable Features
A massive waterfall from the second floor to ground level to cool overall area, green roof and concrete material to reduce room temperature
